What the rule checks
Customer Orders Count compares the number of orders Shopify reports for the customer at your shop. Use it to target an upsell strategy on the Checkout Page, Thank You Page, or One-Click Upsell placements, including a strategy that offers a gift.
The count must be known. A customer whose order count is unavailable does not qualify for a strategy containing this rule. An unavailable count is never treated as zero, even if another rule in that strategy passes.
Conditions and examples
Condition | Count | Customers who qualify |
|---|---|---|
is equal to | 0 | Customers whose reported order count is zero. |
is greater than | 10 | Customers whose reported order count is 11 or more. |
is less than | 10 | Customers whose reported order count is between zero and nine. |
is not equal to | 0 | Customers whose reported order count is at least one. |
Set the condition and Count in your strategy's Customer Orders Count rule. Configure the products and gift incentive separately; the rule controls who qualifies for the strategy.
When the count is unavailable
Shopify may not provide customer identity when the customer is not recognized or has not signed in. A guest customer is therefore not automatically a zero-order customer. Strategies without this rule remain eligible for their normal evaluation.
The rule uses Shopify's reported count on the current page. It does not subtract an order on the Thank You page or estimate purchase history from the cart. See Shopify's Buyer Identity API for the source of this information.
One-Click Upsell uses the customer's reported order count after purchase, including the current order. The count is available only during the active post-purchase session. Order Status does not support exact-count comparisons.
Is customer's first order
Use Is customer's first order to target a customer's first purchase without configuring a count comparison. This rule is available on all Checkout Page and Thank You Page placements, Order Status, and One-Click Upsell placements.
At checkout, the customer qualifies when Shopify reports zero previous orders. On the Thank You page, Shopify's first-order confirmation determines eligibility. On Order Status and One-Click Upsell, the customer qualifies only when they have one order. Customers whose status cannot be confirmed do not qualify.
For One-Click Upsell, the confirmation is limited to the active post-purchase session. It does not remain available after that session expires.
Check the targeting
For checkout, use a recognized customer with a known order history and continue to checkout. Check one customer who matches the condition and one who does not. A strategy or checkout-editor preview can show the offer's appearance, but it does not prove live customer targeting.
