What Is Order Editing?

Order Editing is a Shopify app that lets your customers edit their own orders after checkout, reducing support tickets and increasing post-purchase revenue.

Overview

Order Editing is a Shopify app with three core products: Editing, Upsells, and Address Validation.

Together, they help you reduce support tickets, protect fulfillment accuracy, and create more revenue opportunities around the order journey.

The original Order Editing product lets customers fix their own orders after checkout. The wider platform also includes the Upsells product for recommending products across checkout and post-purchase surfaces, plus address validation tools that help catch delivery issues before they become support problems.

Note: You do not have to use every product at once. Many merchants start with self-service editing, then add Upsells or Address Validation once the core workflow is running.

The three core products

Product

What it does

Best for

Editing

Lets customers make approved changes to their order after checkout, before the editing window closes.

Reducing support tickets for address changes, product changes, quantity changes, cancellations, shipping updates, and contact updates.

Upsells

Shows targeted product recommendations that customers can add to their order or checkout.

Increasing average order value with checkout recommendations, Thank You Page recommendations, Order Status Page recommendations, One-Click Upsells, and Free Shipping Upsells.

Address Validation

Checks shipping addresses and guides customers to fix address issues.

Reducing failed deliveries, carrier surcharges, manual address correction, and fulfillment delays caused by invalid addresses.

Editing

Editing is the self-service order change product. It gives customers a controlled window to make changes after they place an order.

Depending on your settings, customers can edit their shipping address, switch variants, switch products, adjust quantities, change shipping methods, cancel an order, update contact information, apply discount codes, reschedule delivery, or update gift notes.

You control which editing blocks are enabled, how long the editing window stays open, and which orders or products are restricted.

Upsells

Upsells are the revenue product. They help you recommend relevant products at key moments in the customer journey.

You can create strategies for different Upsells placements, including checkout, the Thank You Page, the Order Status Page, the One-Click Upsell page, and Free Shipping Upsells.

Each strategy can use filters, product modules, customer-facing text, discounts, and placement settings so customers see the most relevant recommendation for their cart or order.

Address Validation

Address Validation is the delivery protection product. It checks shipping addresses and helps customers correct problems before an order reaches fulfillment.

You can use address validation at checkout and during shipping address edits, depending on your Shopify plan, extension setup, and validation rules.

This helps prevent invalid addresses, missing address details, unsupported destinations, and other delivery issues that usually become manual support work.

How it works together

Order Editing sits around the order journey, from checkout through the post-purchase editing window.

  1. A customer reaches checkout or places an order.
  2. Address Validation can check the shipping address and prompt the customer to fix address issues.
  3. Upsells can show relevant product recommendations at checkout or after purchase.
  4. Editing lets the customer make approved changes after checkout, while the editing window is still open.
  5. Once the editing window closes, the final order moves forward to fulfillment, your warehouse, 3PL, ERP, or connected tools.

Tip: Think of Editing as the support-saving product, Upsells as the revenue product, and Address Validation as the delivery-protection product.

What customers experience

Customers only see the parts you enable. Order Editing does not force every feature onto every store.

What you control

Order Editing is configurable. You decide how much freedom customers get, where recommendations appear, and how strict address validation should be.

Control

Examples

Editing access

Editing window length, editing blocks, order rules, product restrictions, shipping method restrictions, and cancellation settings.

Upsell strategy

Placement, filters, products, modules, discounts, customer-facing text, fallback strategies, and checkout extension settings.

Address validation rules

When validation runs, which regions or countries it applies to, which address issues should block checkout, and which issues should only warn customers.

Fulfillment readiness

When orders become ready for fulfillment, when payment capture happens, and how Order Editing works with your tech stack.

When to use each product

If you want to reduce support tickets

Start with Editing by configuring the full editing flow. Set the editing window, choose the editing blocks customers can use, review your editing rules and restrictions, and test the changes that match your most common support tickets.

If you want to increase order value

Start with Upsells. Create one clear strategy, choose the placement, add product modules, and test the customer experience before expanding to more placements.

If you want to reduce delivery issues

Start with Address Validation. Create validation rules for the address issues that cause the most manual work, then test how customers see those prompts at checkout or during address edits.

FAQ

Do I need to use all three products?

No. You can use Editing, Upsells, Address Validation, or a combination of the three. The best starting point depends on whether your biggest goal is reducing tickets, increasing revenue, or preventing delivery issues.

Is Address Validation the same as shipping address edits?

No. Shipping address edits let customers change their address after checkout. Address Validation checks whether an address looks deliverable and can prompt customers to correct address issues.

Are Upsells only post-purchase?

No. Upsells can appear across multiple placements, including checkout, the Thank You Page, the Order Status Page, the One-Click Upsell page, and Free Shipping Upsells.

What happens after the editing window closes?

After the editing window closes, customers can no longer make self-service edits for that order. The finalized order then moves forward to fulfillment based on your Order Editing settings and connected tools.
