How Order Editing Works

Overview of how Order Editing works for your customers, your team, and your fulfilment, from checkout to delivery.

7 min read

Overview

Order Editing gives your customers a short window after checkout to make changes to their order themselves, without contacting your support team. They can update their shipping address, swap a variant, change quantities, add something they forgot, or cancel.

Everything happens inside Shopify. There is no separate portal or system to manage. Edits are applied to the real Shopify order, payments and refunds run through Shopify, and every change is recorded on the standard order timeline your team already uses.

The result: fewer "can I change my order?" tickets, fewer cancellations and returns, and recovered revenue from customers who add to their order before it ships.

The Editing Window

The editing window is the time after checkout during which a customer can change their order. You set how long it lasts. Most stores use 30 to 60 minutes, matched to how quickly their warehouse starts picking and packing.

While the window is open, the customer can make changes. When it closes, the order locks automatically, the customer sees that changes are no longer possible, and the order moves through to fulfilment exactly as they left it.

💡 Tip: Set the window to a little less than the time it takes your warehouse to start picking an order. That gives customers room to make changes while keeping fulfilment safe.

What Your Customer Sees

The Order Editing extension appears in three places, so customers can find it whether they stay on the page or come back later:

Where

When they see it

Thank You Page

Immediately after they complete checkout

Order Status Page

When they return from the "View your order" link in their confirmation email

Order confirmation email

The link in the email takes them to the Order Status Page, where they can edit

The customer sees a countdown timer showing how long they have left, and the editing options you have enabled. When they make a change, it is confirmed on screen straight away.

How customers pay for a change. If a change increases the order total (an upgrade, for example adding a product or a more expensive variant), the customer pays the difference there and then. If a change reduces the total (a downgrade, for example removing an item), the difference is refunded automatically, either to their original payment method or as store credit, depending on your settings.

What Customers Can Change

Order Editing is a suite of editing features. You turn on the ones that suit your store and hide the rest, and you can reorder how they appear to customers. Each one is a feature you switch on or off in the Order Editing app.

What You See in Your Shopify Admin

Because Order Editing works through Shopify's own order system, you do not need to check a separate dashboard to see what changed. Everything lands in the places your team already looks:

Where

What you'll see

The order itself

The order is updated in real time. Line items, quantities, address, and totals reflect the customer's changes.

Order timeline

A record of every change: items edited, address updated, invoice sent, payment captured, holds placed and released, cancellations.

Order tags

Tags like orderediting and orderediting:product_added are added so you can filter orders and trigger Shopify Flow automations.

Order Editing Home

A summary of editing activity, revenue, and anything that needs attention.

ℹ️ Note: Edits made through Order Editing are attributed to "Order Editing" on the timeline, because that is how Shopify records changes made by an app. For the full list of what each entry means, see Understanding Order Editing Timeline Events.

How Order Editing Keeps Fulfilment Safe

The most important job Order Editing does behind the scenes is making sure your warehouse or fulfilment partner only ever receives the final version of an order, never a half-edited one. It does this in one of two ways, depending on your setup.

Delayed payment capture. Payment is authorized at checkout but not captured until the editing window closes. Many fulfilment partners only pull an order once it is marked paid, so they naturally receive the finalized order. This is the most common setup. See Setting Up Delayed Payment Capture.

Order holds. For partners that pull orders the moment they are placed, Order Editing puts a hold on the order during the editing window and releases it when the window closes. The order stays out of your partner's queue until it is final.

💡 Tip: Not sure which applies to you? Your onboarding specialist sets this up for you based on your fulfilment stack. See Your Tech Stack and Order Editing.

The Full Journey, Start to Finish

Here is what happens from the moment a customer clicks "Buy" to the moment their order ships.

Step

What happens

1. Order placed

The customer completes checkout. Payment is authorized but not yet captured (with delayed payment capture).

2. Editing window opens

The Order Editing extension appears on the Thank You Page and Order Status Page. The customer can make changes immediately.

3. Customer edits (optional)

The customer updates their order. Changes are applied to the Shopify order in real time, and any price difference is charged or refunded.

4. Editing window closes

The timer runs out. The order locks. No further changes are possible.

5. Payment captured

Payment is captured for the final order amount, including any additions or removals.

6. Order released to fulfilment

Your warehouse, 3PL, or shipping platform receives the finalized order and begins processing.

Why It Matters

Benefit

How Order Editing delivers it

Fewer support tickets

Customers fix their own mistakes (wrong address, wrong size) instead of emailing your team.

Fewer cancellations and returns

A customer who can correct an order is far less likely to cancel it or send it back.

More revenue per order

Customers add items and accept upsells during the window, lifting your average order value.

Happier customers

Instant, self-serve changes are a better experience than waiting on a support reply.
