Getting Started with Upsells

Create separate Product Carousel strategies for the Thank You and Order Status pages, then install and preview both.

What you'll create

In this tutorial, you will create two Product Carousel strategies:

  • one for the Thank You page, where customers see recommendations immediately after checkout;
  • one for the Order Status page, where customers can see recommendations again when they return to track or edit their order.

The Product Carousel is a swipeable row inside the main Order Editing block. Using a separate strategy for each page gives you control over the products, message, audience, schedule, and results for each part of the customer journey.

Before you begin

You need:

  • at least one active product source, such as a Shopify collection, group of products, or dynamic recommendation module;
  • permission to manage Order Editing and edit Shopify's Thank You and Order Status pages.

For the example below, prepare a Shopify collection containing active products available in the markets you want to use.

  1. In Order Editing, open App Settings.
  2. Select Editing blocks.
  3. Open Product Carousel.
  4. Enable product upsells if the page says they are disabled.
  5. Open Advanced settings.
  6. Turn on Upsell carousels on the thank you page.
  7. Turn on Upsell carousels on the order status page.
  8. Confirm Always hide all product carousels is off.
  9. Select Save Changes if you changed a setting.

This step enables the Product Carousel inside the main Order Editing blocks. You will create the offers themselves under Upsell Strategies.

  1. Open Upsell Strategies.
  2. Select Create Strategy > Create from scratch.
  3. Stay on Placements.
  4. Select Product Carousel for the Thank You Page.
  5. Continue to Create Upsell Strategy.
  6. Under MARKETS, choose the Shopify markets that should receive the offer.
  7. Under NAME, enter a name such as Thank You Product Carousel.
  8. Change the strategy status to Draft while you finish the setup.
  9. Under WHO, keep All customers selected for this first strategy.

The strategy name is for your team and is not shown to customers.

Choose the products

  1. Go to WHAT.
  2. Select Add Module.
  3. Choose Collection.
  4. Select Select collection.
  5. Choose the Shopify collection you prepared.
  6. Set Show up to to the number of recommendations you want available.
  7. Choose Shuffle every time or Keep collection order.
  8. Review the offer text and quantity settings.
  9. Select Add collection.

You can use another supported product module instead. Starting with one collection gives you a predictable group of products for the first preview.

Products are checked when the customer sees the offer. Product status, market availability, inventory, hidden-product settings, and other eligibility rules can change which products appear.

Save the Thank You strategy as Draft

  1. Review the placement, markets, audience, products, offer, and preview.
  2. Leave the strategy status as Draft.
  3. Select Publish.

Publish saves the strategy with its selected status. A Draft strategy is not eligible for customer traffic.

Duplicate it for the Order Status page

Open the saved Thank You strategy and decide whether the two pages should use the same experience or pursue different goals.

  • Use the same experience: duplicate the strategy and keep the targeting, products, discount, and offer text the same.
  • Use different goals: duplicate the strategy as a starting point, then change the products, targeting, discount, or copy for customers returning to track their order.

To create the second strategy:

  1. Open the strategy action menu.
  2. Select Duplicate Strategy.
  3. Change the name to something like Order Status Product Carousel.
  4. Under WHERE, remove the Thank You Product Carousel placement.
  5. Add Product Carousel for the Order Status Page.
  6. Keep the duplicated products, targeting, and offer when you want the same experience.
  7. Change those settings when the Order Status page has a different goal.
  8. Keep the duplicated strategy as Draft.
  9. Select Publish.

The duplicate is a separate strategy. Future changes to one strategy do not automatically update the other.

The Thank You page is best for an immediate complementary offer while the purchase is fresh. The Order Status page gives customers another opportunity when they return to track or edit the order.

Install the main Order Editing blocks

  1. Open Shopify's checkout editor for the Thank You page.
  2. Select Add app block.
  3. Add Order Editing (Thank You Page).
  4. Place the block where customers can find it.
  5. Switch the editor to the Order Status page.
  6. Select Add app block.
  7. Add the main Order Editing block.
  8. Place the block where customers can find it.
  9. Review both pages on desktop and mobile.
  10. Select Save.

The Product Carousel appears inside these main Order Editing blocks. You do not need to install a separate Product Carousel app block.

Preview and activate both strategies

  1. Open the Thank You strategy in Order Editing.
  2. Select Preview.
  3. Confirm the expected products, price, offer text, and quantity controls.
  4. Open the Order Status strategy.
  5. Select Preview.
  6. Confirm its products and message match the goal for that page.
  7. Open Shopify's checkout editor.
  8. Review the main Order Editing block on the Thank You page.
  9. Switch to Order Status and review the block there separately.
  10. Return to each strategy.
  11. Change each reviewed strategy to Active.
  12. Save each strategy.

The strategy previews confirm the products and presentation. Shopify's checkout editor confirms the blocks are installed and positioned. Neither preview proves a real product addition or payment update.

Optional: test a real product addition

Open an existing eligible order in the selected market and visit its Order Status page when you need to confirm the live add-to-order and additional-payment journey. Accept one carousel offer, then confirm the Shopify order update. You do not need to place a new order for this check.

What to expect

Customers see a carousel when its page is enabled, the main Order Editing block is installed, an Active strategy matches, and at least one product is eligible.

Using two strategies lets you compare each page independently. If you duplicated the first strategy without changing the offer, customers receive a consistent experience across both pages. If you changed the duplicate, each page can support a different merchandising goal.

On Product Carousel, use Show best-sellers as a fallback when popular available products should fill an empty carousel. Turn it off when the carousel should show only strategy-controlled recommendations.

For more placement and fallback controls, see Product Carousel.

What's next

Review impressions, paid conversion, revenue, and top products for each strategy after they receive real traffic. Compare the pages separately before deciding which products or messages to change.

Shopify Sidekick can stage another supported carousel strategy while leaving product selection, placement review, and Publish to you. See Getting Started with Shopify Sidekick and Order Editing to browse prompts and understand staged changes.
