Configuring Upsell Settings

Configure account-wide product, discount, display, checkout branding, inventory, data, and restriction settings for upsell strategies.

Strategy settings and global settings

Settings inside a strategy affect that strategy. Upsell Settings contains account-wide controls that can affect multiple strategies and placements.

Open Upsell Strategies, open the page action menu, and select Settings. When a strategy offers its own override, that value takes precedence over the related global default.

Products

Use Products to manage Hidden Products and post-purchase handling for long-running unfulfilled pre-orders. Products tagged orderediting-hidden are hidden automatically.

Supporting orders older than Shopify's normal order-access window requires read_all_orders access.

Discounts

Use Discounts for global post-purchase product-discount behaviour and savings display. Review compare-at pricing and discount combinations before advertising a percentage. When a generated discount is reported out of sync, use Resync now before checking the customer result.

Advanced safeguards for sale items or conflicting order discounts are configured inside the individual strategy.

Display

Use Display for shared product-card content such as descriptions, thumbnails, default headlines, variant names, collection filters, review stars, and purchased-product visibility.

Use Auto (detect automatically) for product reviews unless you need a specific supported provider.

Branding

Branding is configured separately for Checkout, One-click upsell, Thank You Page, and Order Status Page. Open the surface you want to change and compare Card preview with Live preview where available.

Common card controls include:

  • Card corner radius;
  • Card frame: Auto, Hide frame, and, for supported lists, Padded Card Frame;
  • Row dividers for product lists;
  • headline alignment and offer-text styling;
  • product image corner radius, border thickness, and aspect ratio.

Checkout module controls

Checkout branding also includes controls for the offer as a whole:

Setting

What it changes

Upsell frame

Adds one padded outline around the title, pagination, and products. Prefer this over separate padded product cards when the whole offer should read as one module.

Space above and below

Adds Small, Base, or Large separation from checkout sections. Content blocks remain outside this space.

Pagination control

Uses Shopify-style buttons or smaller clickable chevrons.

Pagination style

Auto, both directions, or a single next direction. Offers wrap so every product remains reachable.

Pagination spacing

Controls the gap between previous and next when both directions are used.

Pagination button style

Uses Auto, Primary, or Secondary checkout button styling. It applies to buttons, not clickable chevrons.

Auto is the safest starting point because it follows Shopify checkout styling and responsive behaviour. Check narrow and wide live previews before replacing it.

Product Affinity

Use Product Affinity to pin enabled Shopify Search & Discovery storefront filters for strategy setup. Pinning makes a signal available; it does not enable ranking by itself. Select one to three compatible signals inside the strategy.

Data sources and metafields

  • Data sources manages custom data used by supported product-selection and personalisation features.
  • Metafield Filters pins strategy metafields for Shopify admin search and filtering. These pins do not target customers.
  • Metafield decorations controls how supported product and variant metafields appear on offer cards.

Configure only a source or metafield behaviour that a strategy or integration uses.

Inventory

Use Inventory for inventory availability, location priority, geographic controls, and supported metafield-based stock behaviour. Test low-stock, zero-stock, and location-specific products.

Restrictions

Use Restrictions to block all upsells when an order contains selected products and to control supported automatic reversal of unpaid order edits.

Restrictions can stop the entire upsell experience. Hidden Products removes only selected candidates from offers.

Test a global change

  1. Note the active strategies and placements that use the setting.
  2. Make one global change at a time.
  3. Check an affected strategy in a selected market.
  4. Check a strategy that should not be affected.
  5. Compare card and live previews on narrow and wide layouts.
  6. Confirm products, prices, discounts, inventory, content blocks, and styling.
  7. Monitor the first live impressions and warnings after launch.

An active strategy can become empty when its products are hidden, unavailable, already purchased, restricted, or outside the selected market.
