Hidden Products
Hidden Products lets you define which products should never appear to customers on any upsell surface. Use this to exclude gift cards, internal-only products, out-of-stock items, or anything else you don't want recommended during post-purchase editing.
You'll find this at Settings > Hidden Products.
ℹ️ Note: Products hidden here are removed from all customers on all upsell surfaces, including the Thank You page, Order Status page, and checkout upsells. This is a global setting.
Configure Hidden Products
Hidden products are defined using a search query builder. You create filters that match the products you want to hide, and Order Editing automatically excludes them from all recommendations.
To configure your hidden products:
- In Order Editing, go to Settings > Hidden Products.
- Click the search query bar to open the Configure Hidden Products modal.
- Add one or more filters using the options below.
- Click Preview results to see which products match your query.
- Confirm and save your configuration.
Filter Options
The query builder gives you five ways to target products for hiding. You can combine multiple filters to create precise exclusion rules.
Filter | What It Does |
Select specific products | Manually pick individual products to hide. Use this when you have a small number of specific products that should never be recommended. |
Hide products by name | Match products whose title contains a specific keyword or phrase. Useful for hiding products with common naming patterns, such as all products containing "Sample" or "Test". |
Hide products by tags | Match products that have a specific Shopify product tag. This is the most scalable approach since you can tag products in bulk from your Shopify admin. |
Hide products by type | Match products by their Shopify product type field. Use this to hide entire product categories, such as all products with the type "Gift Card" or "Subscription". |
Product availability | Automatically hide products based on availability characteristics. Includes two checkboxes: Hide free products (products with a $0 price) and Hide gift cards (Shopify gift card products). |
💡 Tip: Use the Preview results button after configuring your filters. The preview panel shows exactly which products will be hidden, so you can verify before saving.
Hide Products Using a Tag
The simplest way to hide products at scale is with the orderediting-hidden tag. Add this tag to any product in your Shopify admin, and Order Editing will automatically exclude it from all upsell surfaces.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Select the product you want to hide.
- In the Tags field, add
orderediting-hidden. - Click Save.
This method works independently of the query builder. Any product tagged with orderediting-hidden is hidden regardless of your other filter settings.
Unlisted Products
Products set to "not visible" or unlisted in your Shopify online store are hidden from Order Editing by default. You don't need to add any tags or filters to exclude them. Order Editing respects Shopify's product visibility settings automatically.
✅ Good to know: If a product is set to "Active" in Shopify but is not listed on any sales channel, Order Editing won't show it to customers. You only need to use hidden product filters for products that are visible on your storefront but shouldn't appear as upsell recommendations.
FAQ
Do hidden products affect existing orders?
No, hiding a product only prevents it from being recommended as an upsell. If a customer already purchased a hidden product, it still appears in their order and can still be edited normally.
Can I hide specific variants instead of the whole product?
The Hidden Products feature works at the product level. To hide specific variants, use the Hidden Product Variants by Title option in Editing Restrictions instead.
What's the difference between hiding a product and restricting it?
Hidden products are excluded from upsell recommendations. They won't appear when customers browse or search for products to add. Editing Restrictions prevent customers from editing specific items already in their order. Use hidden products for upsell control and restrictions for edit control.
Can I combine multiple filters?
Yes, you can use multiple filters together. For example, you could hide all products tagged "internal" AND all gift cards AND a specific product by name. All matching products across all filters are hidden.
