What Product Search does

Product Search lets customers find and add products while they edit an existing order. Customers can browse recommended products, and you can optionally let them search the storefront catalogue.

Open App Settings, select Editing blocks, then open Product Search.

The page is titled Product search and describes the block as Find and buy products while editing an order.

Before you begin

Confirm that:

  • the customer can open the Order Editing experience;
  • the editing window is long enough to browse, add, and pay for another product;
  • the products you want to offer are active and available in the customer's market;
  • your payment and inventory settings support added products.

Enable product discovery

  1. Turn on Allow customers to find products to purchase.
  2. Select Save changes.

This is the main control for the Product Search editing block. When it is off, customers cannot use this block to browse or buy additional products during an edit.

Turn on Allow customers to search your storefront products when customers should be able to enter their own search terms.

If storefront search is off, customers can still browse the product recommendations supplied by your current in-app upsell strategy. This lets you offer a controlled list without opening the full search experience.

Control which products appear

Use the preference links on the page to manage the product pool:

Preference

Use it to

Manage hidden products

Exclude products from customer search and other product selectors.

Product discounts

Configure global product-discount behaviour for products added after purchase.

Curate list shown in search results

Create or manage an in-app editing strategy for the recommendations shown in Product Search.

Hidden Products are global. A product hidden there should not be used as a recommendation simply because it was added to a strategy.

Curate recommendations with a strategy

Select Curate the list of products shown in search results when you want to control the products customers see before they search. The app starts a best-sellers strategy for In-App Editing, all markets, and all customers, which you can then configure with product modules.

If you see Convert to strategy, the store has a saved legacy product query. Select the action to migrate that query into an in-app upsell strategy with a Keyword Search module already filled in. Review the created strategy before making it active.

Strategies give you more flexible recommendation sources than the former page-level product filters. You can combine the placement, market, customer targeting, modules, offer settings, and advanced options in the Upsell Strategies journey.

  1. Save the Product Search settings.
  2. Open an existing eligible order in a market you support.
  3. Confirm the editing window is still active.
  4. Confirm the recommended products appear.
  5. If storefront search is enabled, search for a known active product.
  6. Add the product and complete any additional payment.
  7. Confirm the item was added to the existing Shopify order and inventory changed as expected.

Repeat the check with a hidden product and a product unavailable in the selected market. Neither should be offered to that customer. You can reuse the same order after refreshing the customer page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a product not appear?

Check its Shopify status, market availability, inventory, hidden-product settings, and the product modules in the matching in-app strategy.

Does Product Search create a separate order?

No. A completed purchase is added to the customer's existing order.
