Before you begin
Product Affinity works with dynamic discovery modules. It does not reorder products in fixed-selection modules such as Single Product or Group of Products.
Each affinity signal must be available as an enabled storefront filter in Shopify Search & Discovery. Creating a product metafield alone is not enough.
Prepare a Shopify storefront filter
- In Shopify, create or identify a product metafield that represents a useful similarity, such as colour, material, fit, or range.
- Populate it consistently on the relevant products.
- Open Shopify Search & Discovery.
- Add the metafield as a storefront filter and enable it.
- Confirm the filter is available on the storefront before returning to Order Editing.
Order Editing only offers supported Shopify storefront filters as affinity signals.
Add Product Affinity signals
- Open Apps > Order Editing > Upsells and create or edit a strategy that uses a dynamic discovery module.
- Open Product Affinity.
- Select the first enabled Shopify storefront filter.
- Add up to two more signals when they materially improve similarity.
- Order the signals from highest to lowest priority.
- Save and preview the strategy.
How matching works
Order Editing first looks for candidates that match all configured signals. When that returns no usable products, it removes the lowest-priority signal and tries again. It continues this fallback until a candidate can be returned or no affinity signals remain.
If no affinity candidate is available, the product module continues with its normal recommendation or discovery behaviour. Product Affinity does not create a separate local ranking that works without the enabled Shopify storefront filter.
For example, with Range, Colour, and Material in that priority order, Order Editing tries all three first. It then retries Range plus Colour, followed by Range, before returning to the module's normal fallback.
Preview the result
- Preview a cart or product that has values for every signal.
- Confirm the closest products appear first.
- Preview a case with no match for the lowest-priority signal and confirm the broader fallback remains relevant.
- Confirm fixed product modules retain the order you selected.
If the signal is missing, return to Shopify Search & Discovery and confirm the metafield is enabled as a storefront filter and populated on the source and candidate products.
