Localization

Localization lets you manage the translations for your Order Editing storefront. Enable or disable languages for your customer base, configure translations for each language, and preview how customers from different countries will see your storefront.

You'll find this at Settings > Localization.

Language Options

The Language Options panel shows all available languages with their current status. You can activate as many languages as needed for your store. Each language can be in one of three states:

Status

Meaning

Default

The primary language for your storefront. All content defaults to this language. Only one language can be set as the default.

Published

The language is active and visible to customers. Customers browsing from a matching locale will see your storefront in this language.

Not published

The language is available for configuration but is not live. Customers won't see this language until you publish it.

Click Configure next to any language to edit its translations. This lets you customise the text that appears in your Order Editing storefront for that specific language or regional variant.

Supported Languages

Order Editing supports a wide range of languages and regional variants including: English, English (United Kingdom), English (United States), French, French (France), French (Belgium), French (Switzerland), Japanese, Spanish, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (United States), German, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Danish, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Swedish, Norwegian, Norwegian Bokmål, Norwegian Nynorsk, and Finnish.

💡 Tip: Regional variants like French (France) and French (Belgium) let you tailor translations to specific markets. You also have the option to lock a language to a specific region, so only customers from that country see it.

Languages Summary

The Languages Summary panel gives you a quick overview of your language configuration:

Field

Description

Enabled Languages

The total number of languages currently published or set as default.

Country-Locked Languages

Shows how many languages are restricted to specific countries. If no languages are locked, customers from any country can view any published language.

Default Language

The primary language your storefront falls back to when a customer's locale doesn't match any published language.

Language Preview

The Language Preview panel lets you test how customers from different countries will see your translations. Click + Select Country to choose a country and preview your storefront as it would appear to a customer browsing from that location.

Example: If you've published French and want to verify how your storefront looks for a customer in France, select France from the preview dropdown. You'll see all of your Order Editing text rendered in your French translations.

FAQ

How does Order Editing detect which language to show a customer?

Order Editing follows your Shopify store's locale settings. When a customer visits your store, Shopify determines their locale based on their browser settings or the market they're browsing. Order Editing then displays the matching published language.

What happens if a customer's language isn't published?

If the customer's detected language isn't published, Order Editing falls back to your default language. For example, if a German-speaking customer visits but German is not published, they'll see your storefront in English (or whatever your default is).

Can I lock a language to a specific country?

Yes. Country-locked languages are restricted so only customers from specific countries see that language. This is useful if you want French (France) to only appear for customers in France, while French (Belgium) appears for Belgian customers.
