Why this matters
Many customers close the Thank You page straight after checkout, so they never see the Order Editing block there. Your order confirmation email is your second chance to tell them they can still make changes. Its View your order button already opens the Order Status page, where customers edit their order.
Order Editing adds a short message in your brand style and changes the button to Edit or view your order. Shopify does not let apps change notification emails directly, so you copy your email into Order Editing and paste the updated version back.
Before you begin
- This guide is for the order confirmation email in Settings > Notifications in Shopify. If you send order confirmations from Klaviyo, see the FAQ below.
- Set your editing window first. The message uses it, for example "You have 30 minutes to make any last-minute changes to your order."
Add the editing message
- In Order Editing, go to App Settings > Notifications.
- Under Order confirmation, click Set up.
- In Shopify, go to Settings > Notifications > Order confirmation and click Edit code. Select all the code and copy it.
- Paste it into Order confirmation code in Order Editing. The preview and message settings open when the code can be updated.
- Choose a Look and Message color, and change the Message if you like.
- Under Don't show it for, choose which orders should not see the message, for example subscription or pickup orders. These customers still get a View your order button.
- Choose whether to add a Download your invoice button.
- Click Copy updated code. This also saves your message settings in Order Editing.
- In Shopify, select all the code in Edit code, paste the updated email, click Preview to check it, then click Save.
- Back in Order Editing, click I've saved it in Shopify. Setup stays unfinished until you confirm this step, even if you leave and return later.
If your browser blocks copying, open View code, select all the updated code and copy it manually. If you return later and the code could not be kept, paste your current Shopify email code into Order Editing again to continue setup.
Before you copy the updated code, click Download original email to keep a copy. You can also click Revert to default in Shopify's template editor at any time.
What Order Editing changes
Under What we changed, you can review the changes to your email, which can include:
- Adding your editing message above the View your order button.
- Changing the button text to Edit or view your order.
- Adding a Download your invoice button for every customer.
- Fixing typos that stop Shopify saving your email, such as "your r ready" instead of "your order ready".
Keep it up to date
After installation, change your message settings in Order Editing and click Save. You do not need to paste the code again. The editing-window wording also updates when you change the window in Editing Time.
If you see Needs retry, your settings are saved but the email update could not be confirmed. Open the email settings and click Retry update before relying on the new wording. Use Replace code if you change the email template in Shopify and need to add the message again.
FAQ
Order Editing can't find my "View your order" button. What do I do?
Your email is customised in a way the setup can't update automatically yet, for example a template built in another app. Contact our team and we will update it for you.
I use Klaviyo for my order confirmation email. What do I do?
Make the equivalent change in your Klaviyo order confirmation flow. Add a short note about the editing window and point the button at the Order Status page, which is available as the order_status_url variable.
Can the email show the exact editing deadline?
The message describes your configured editing window, for example "30 minutes". It does not calculate a deadline for each order. Scheduled windows use general editing-deadline wording because the remaining time depends on when the order was placed.
What happens if a customer clicks the button after the editing window has closed?
They go to the Order Status page and see their order details, but editing is no longer available.
