Post-Checkout Address Correction

How customers can fix their shipping address after checkout on the Thank You and Order Status pages.

4 min read

Overview

Post-checkout address correction validates your customer's shipping address after they complete their purchase. If a problem is found, the customer sees a suggestion they can accept with one click, without needing to contact support or wait for you to fix it manually.

This runs on the Thank You page and the Order Status page, and works on all Shopify plans (not just Shopify Plus).

How it works

  1. A customer completes checkout with a shipping address that has an issue (e.g. a typo, incorrect postal code, or ambiguous street name).
  2. Address Validation checks the address against postal databases.
  3. If a correction is found, the customer sees a suggestion on the Thank You page immediately after purchase.
  4. The customer can accept the corrected address with one click or keep their original.
  5. If they don't act on the Thank You page, the suggestion carries over to the Order Status page where they can still make the change.

Thank You page

The Thank You page (also called the Order Confirmation page) appears immediately after checkout. This is where customers are most likely to act, since they're still engaged with their order.

When a suggestion is available, the customer sees a banner at the top of the page:

"We found a more accurate address"

The banner shows the suggested address and two options: Use Corrected Address and Keep my address.

Below the suggestion, the customer sees their full Order Editing options (edit delivery address, change products, cancel order, etc.) with a countdown showing how much time they have left to make edits.

💡 Tip: To enable one-click acceptance on the Thank You page, turn on "Allow accepting suggestions on Thank You Page" in your verifier's Advanced Settings. Without this, customers need to go to the Order Status page to make changes.

Order Status page

The Order Status page is the self-service editing hub where customers manage their orders. Customers reach it by clicking through from the Thank You page or from the link in their order confirmation email.

If an address suggestion is available, the Edit delivery address option shows an orange "Suggestion available" badge. When the customer expands it, they see:

  1. The suggestion banner with the corrected address.
  2. Use corrected address and Keep my address options.
  3. The full address editing form, so they can also make manual changes if they prefer.

This gives customers two ways to fix their address: accept the automated suggestion, or edit it themselves.

Address correction modal

In some cases, customers see a side-by-side comparison modal that makes the correction clearer:

Original address (with a warning icon) is shown on the left. Suggested address (with a checkmark) is shown on the right. An arrow between them highlights the change.

Below the comparison: "Keep my address" and "Use corrected address" buttons. A helper line reads: "Using the corrected address helps prevent delivery issues."

Customers always have the final say. They can accept the suggestion, keep their original, or edit the address manually.

How it ties into the editing window

Post-checkout address correction works within your store's editing deadline. The countdown timer on the Order Status page (e.g. "29:29 time left to edit") applies to address corrections just like any other edit.

Once the editing deadline expires, customers can no longer accept address suggestions or make changes. Make sure your editing deadline gives customers enough time to review and act on suggestions.

Setting it up

Post-checkout address correction works automatically when your verifier is configured to run after purchase.

  1. Go to Address Validation and edit your verifier.
  2. Under Advanced Settings > Surface Settings, set the surface to Both checkout and post-purchase or Post-purchase only.
  3. Turn on Allow accepting suggestions on Thank You Page for one-click acceptance.
  4. Save your verifier.

Make sure you've also installed the Order Editing block on both the Thank You page and Order Status page. See Install Order Editing block on your store.

Frequently asked questions

Does post-checkout correction work on all Shopify plans?

Yes. Post-checkout validation on the Thank You page and Order Status page works on all Shopify plans. Checkout validation (before purchase) requires Shopify Plus.

Can customers ignore the suggestion?

Yes. Customers can always click "Keep my address" to proceed with their original entry. The suggestion is never forced.

What if the editing deadline expires before they accept?

Once the editing deadline passes, the address correction option is no longer available. The order ships with the original address. Consider extending your editing deadline if customers need more time to review suggestions.
