Overview
Every message that Address Validation shows to your customers can be customised. You can rewrite the default copy to match your brand voice, translate messages into other languages, or both.
There are two places to customise messages: the Translations screen for verifier messages, and the Display Message field for validation rules.
Customising verifier messages
Verifier messages appear when a customer's address is checked against postal databases. These include confirmation messages, suggestions, clarification prompts, and error notices.
- In the Order Editing app, go to Address Validation.
- Click Translate in the top right corner of the page.
- The Address Validation Translations panel opens, showing all customer-facing strings.
- Enter your custom text in any field to override the default.
- Click Save Translations.
Available strings
You can customise 16 customer-facing messages:

💡 Tip: This isn't just for translations. Use it to rewrite messages in your brand's tone of voice. For example, change "We couldn't validate your address" to "Hmm, we can't find that address. Mind double-checking?" No third-party branding appears to your customers.
Customising validation rule messages
Validation rule messages are set individually on each rule, not in the Translations screen.
- Go to Address Validation > Real-time Validation Rules.
- Click on the rule you want to edit.
- In the Display Message section, write your custom message.
- Or click the generate button (sparkle icon) to have a message written automatically based on the triggers you've selected.
- Save the rule.
Validation rule messages are automatically translated at checkout based on the customer's language settings.
Previewing in other languages
You can preview how validation messages appear in different languages from the Shopify checkout editor.
- Go to Shopify admin > Settings > Checkout and click Customise.
- Click the Address Validation block in the sidebar.
- Under Block settings, use the Language dropdown to select a language.
- The preview updates to show how messages will appear in that language.
Frequently asked questions
Are messages automatically translated?
Validation rule messages are automatically translated at checkout. Verifier messages use the defaults unless you override them in the Translations screen. If you override a message, you'll need to provide your own translations for other languages.
Will customers see any third-party branding?
No. Address Validation is fully whitelabelled. No Experian logos or third-party attribution appears to your customers. Every message can be written in your own voice.
