Setting Up the Upgrade to Subscription Module

Offer eligible cart products as subscriptions using their Shopify selling plans on supported checkout placements.

5 min read

Before you begin

  • Your products must use Shopify's native selling plans. The module cannot create subscription plans.
  • Your subscription app must publish the selling plans to Shopify and make them available on the relevant products and market.
  • Upgrade to Subscription is supported only on Product List Upsell and Free Shipping Upsell placements.
  • Both supported placements require Shopify Plus and the applicable checkout extension.
  • The module offers subscription versions of products already in the cart. You do not select a separate product list.

Add Upgrade to Subscription

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Apps > Order Editing.
  2. Select Upsell Strategies.
  3. Create a strategy from Placements or open a draft strategy.
  4. Select Product List Upsell or Free Shipping Upsell as the placement.
  5. Continue through market, strategy name, and customer targeting.
  6. At the product selection step, select Add Module.
  7. Choose Upgrade to Subscription. The modal opens as Add subscription upgrade.
  8. Under When a product has several plans, choose how selling plans should be prioritized.
  9. Exclude any selling plans that should not be offered.
  10. Under Advanced settings, set Maximum upgrade offers shown.
  11. Configure the offer text.
  12. Save the module and finish the offer, design, and advanced settings.
  13. Preview and publish only after the checkout extension and selling plans are ready.

If you later change the strategy to an unsupported placement, Order Editing can remove this module. Recheck the product step whenever you change placements.

Choose the selling-plan preference

The module can prioritize eligible plans according to delivery frequency.

Current module default

You can set Maximum upgrade offers shown from 1 to 10. The module can return fewer offers when fewer cart products have eligible plans.

Excluding a selling plan is useful when a plan is technically attached to the product but should not be promoted in checkout. Exclusions do not remove the plan from Shopify or your product page.

Understand eligible products

Order Editing starts with products already in the customer's cart. It checks whether each cart line has an eligible Shopify selling plan and can be upgraded safely.

The module skips a cart line when:

  • it is already a subscription;
  • its product or variant can no longer be resolved;
  • it has no eligible selling plan;
  • all relevant plans are excluded;
  • the product is already represented by another eligible upgrade result;
  • the placement, market, or customer does not match the strategy.

Because this module converts an existing cart choice, global rules that normally hide products already in the cart do not remove the upgrade opportunity.

Customer-facing behaviour

The customer sees an option to replace an eligible one-time purchase with a subscription for the same cart product. The quantity follows the existing cart line.

Before accepting, the customer should be able to review the selected selling plan, delivery frequency, and any displayed savings. The actual subscription terms come from the Shopify selling plan configured for that product.

When the customer accepts, the cart line is updated from a one-time purchase to the selected selling plan. It is not added as an unrelated extra product.

Any savings or price comparison shown by the extension depends on the selling-plan allocation and the offer design. Confirm the displayed amount using an eligible product in checkout.

Prepare products for the module

  1. In Shopify, open a product you want to test.
  2. Confirm at least one active selling plan is attached to the product.
  3. Confirm the plan is available in the test market.
  4. Confirm the product variant is available for purchase.
  5. Add the one-time version to the cart.
  6. Continue to the checkout placement used by the strategy.

If you maintain selling plans in a third-party subscription app, save and synchronize them to Shopify before retesting Order Editing.

If Order Editing cannot load the shop's selling plans, you can still save the module, but no plans will be excluded. If the shop has no subscription selling plans, the module cannot show an upgrade until a plan is created in Shopify.

Check it in checkout

  1. Confirm the strategy uses Product List Upsell or Free Shipping Upsell.
  2. Confirm the applicable Order Editing checkout extension is installed and active.
  3. Confirm the strategy is live for the test market and customer.
  4. Add an eligible product as a one-time purchase to the cart.
  5. Proceed to checkout.
  6. Confirm the subscription upgrade offer appears with the expected plan and wording.
  7. Accept the offer.
  8. Confirm the original cart line changes to a subscription and keeps the expected quantity.

You do not need to place an order. The supported placements run before payment, and checkout shows whether the cart line changes to the expected selling plan and quantity.

FAQ

Why can I not add this module to my strategy?

Check the placement. Upgrade to Subscription is available only for Product List Upsell and Free Shipping Upsell, which require Shopify Plus.

Why is an eligible-looking product missing?

Confirm the cart line is not already a subscription, the selling plan is active and available in the market, the variant is available, and the plan is not excluded in the module.

Can the module create a new selling plan?

No. Create and maintain selling plans through Shopify or your subscription app first.

Can I use this after checkout or in Customer Accounts?

No. The current module is limited to the two supported checkout placements.

What happens to the original cart item?

The customer upgrades that cart line to its subscription version. The module is designed as a swap from one-time purchase to a selling plan, not as an additional unrelated item.
