How to create and manage content blocks

Add reusable banners, media, reviews, and trust content to your upsell strategies.

4 min read

Before you begin

  • Create or open an upsell strategy in Apps > Order Editing > Upsells.
  • In a normal strategy, content blocks appear with product offers by default. Enable If there are no products, continue to show the content block when an offer-list block should remain visible after every product module returns no products.
  • To run content blocks without product modules, enable Only show this strategy when an app block requests it by ID, copy the strategy ID, and paste it into Locked Strategy in the matching Checkout Editor app block. A locked strategy is excluded from normal strategy matching.
  • Keep required checkout information outside layout-specific content blocks.
  • Content blocks currently appear only for shoppers using your store's primary language.

Each template has its own how-to article with setup details.

Create a content block

  1. Open Apps > Order Editing > Upsells.
  2. Select Content blocks.
  3. Select Create content block.
  4. Choose a template, add a clear internal Name, and customize its content.
  5. Set Status to Active, Draft, or Archived.
  6. Set Display on to All Devices, Mobile, or Desktop.
  7. Select Create.

Display on follows the width available to the app block. It does not identify the shopper's physical device. Browser zoom or checkout placement can change the available width.

Add the block to a strategy

  1. Open an upsell strategy.
  2. Under Offer layout, select Add content block.
  3. Create a block or choose an existing block. Order Editing adds it to the strategy layout.
  4. Drag the block before or after product offers, or into a product-selection modal. You can also focus the drag handle and use the keyboard.
  5. Save the strategy. Adding a block from this screen is not complete until the strategy is saved.
  6. Check the strategy preview and checkout-editor preview.

The same content block can be reused in multiple strategies. Editing a shared block updates every strategy that uses it.

Show a normal strategy when there are no products

Normal strategies show their content blocks with eligible product offers. For offer-list app blocks, enable If there are no products, continue to show the content block when the block should still render after every product module returns no eligible products.

Create a content-block-only strategy

  1. Remove every product module from the strategy.
  2. Add the required content blocks under Offer layout.
  3. Enable Only show this strategy when an app block requests it by ID.
  4. Copy the strategy ID.
  5. In Shopify's Checkout Editor, open the target Order Editing app block and paste the ID into Locked Strategy.
  6. Save the app block and the strategy.

The locked strategy appears only in an app block that requests its ID. It does not enter normal strategy matching.

Control when customers can see it

New blocks start as Active. Choose Draft before creating the block when it should remain visible only in the editor and previews.

  1. Open the content block editor.
  2. Set Status to Active, Draft, or Archived.
  3. Select Save to apply the change.

Changing a shared block to Draft hides it from every linked strategy after you save. To archive or delete a block, remove it from every linked strategy first.

Add responsive images

Choose images from Shopify Files. Order Editing saves the original dimensions and Shopify CDN variants for small, medium, and large layouts. Checkout selects an appropriate file size and reserves the image's aspect ratio before it loads, which reduces page weight and layout movement.

Use meaningful alternative text when the image communicates information. Leave alternative text empty only when the image is decorative.

Preview the offer

  1. Open the strategy preview.
  2. Confirm the content block appears in the intended position.
  3. Switch between narrow and wide preview layouts and confirm its visibility.
  4. Open the checkout editor preview for the target extension surface.
  5. Confirm Draft blocks are absent from the buyer preview and Active blocks use the expected image and layout.
