Why these discount codes appear

Order Editing sometimes creates a temporary Shopify discount code to preserve a customer's original saving while recalculating an edited order.

Shopify recalculates an edited order using a new cart. It checks the discount against that cart and the customer again, even though the customer already qualified when they placed the original order.

A code that worked during checkout can therefore become unavailable during an edit. This commonly happens when the original code:

  • is limited to one use per customer;
  • has reached its total usage limit;
  • targets customers who have not ordered before; or
  • can no longer be applied directly to the recalculation cart.

When a supported amount-off or Buy X Get Y code is rejected for one of these reasons, Order Editing can create a limited mirror of that code. The mirror lets Shopify recognise the original saving while it recalculates the products and totals.

This is not a new campaign, and the code is not intended to be shared with customers. It can be created when discount revalidation needs to preserve a redeemed promotion.

Example: preserving a $30 saving

Imagine a customer places a $100 order and uses a one-time $30 discount code. They pay $70.

The customer then adds a product while editing. The eligible products are now worth $120. Shopify may reject the original code because the customer has already used it. Without a mirror, Shopify could calculate $120 and leave out the $30 saving, producing the wrong amount to collect or refund.

The temporary mirror allows Shopify to include the original $30 saving. If the discount still applies to the edited products, the recalculated product total is $90 instead of $120.

The customer does not receive another $30 discount. The mirror preserves the saving already included in the original order.

Why Order Editing uses a Shopify discount code

Shopify's pricing engine calculates how discounts apply across products, quantities, collections, minimum purchase requirements, and combinations. Those calculations affect the balance created by an edit.

Order Editing cannot safely preserve the saving by simply subtracting an amount from the final total. That could ignore Shopify's allocation and eligibility rules and produce the wrong amount to collect or refund.

Instead, Order Editing creates a temporary discount in Shopify with the pricing terms needed for recalculation. Shopify can then apply its own rules to the edited products. The mirror removes the customer-history restriction blocking the recalculation while limiting the code's usage and expiry.

How to recognise an Order Editing discount

Open Discounts in the Shopify admin and check these details:

Field

What you might see

What it means

Title

OrderEditing.com - [original discount title]

Identifies the source promotion.

Code

ORDEREDITING-[original code]

Identifies the recalculation mirror.

Created by

Order Editing App

Shopify records Order Editing as the creator.

Eligibility

All customers

Allows Shopify to recalculate after the original customer's eligibility has been consumed.

Usage

A limited total or per-order use

Restricts the mirror to the recalculation purpose.

Active dates

A short validity period

Expires at the earliest applicable limit, never later than the source discount or 30 days after creation.

For example, WELCOME10 can produce ORDEREDITING-WELCOME10 with the title OrderEditing.com - Welcome offer.

All customers does not mean Order Editing is launching a public promotion. The mirror uses this eligibility because one-time or first-order eligibility may no longer pass after checkout. Do not publish or share the generated code.

What the mirror preserves

Depending on the discount type, the mirror can preserve:

  • percentage or fixed-amount value;
  • eligible products, variants, or collections;
  • minimum quantity or subtotal requirements;
  • Buy X Get Y purchase and reward conditions; and
  • discount combination settings.

The mirror is a separate Shopify discount. It does not replace or edit the merchant-created source discount.

What happens after it is created

  1. Order Editing asks Shopify to calculate the edited products with the original code.
  2. Shopify reports that the original code is not applicable to the recalculation cart.
  3. Order Editing checks whether it is a supported type with a one-time, customer, or usage restriction.
  4. Order Editing creates or reuses the matching ORDEREDITING- code.
  5. Shopify recalculates with the mirror so the saving is not removed only because the code was already redeemed.
  6. The mirror expires no later than the source promotion and is capped at 30 days.

Order Editing marks newly created mirrors as app-owned. After Shopify reports an app-owned mirror as expired, Order Editing deactivates it. An expired record can remain visible in Shopify admin without being an active promotion.

Should you deactivate the code?

Do not deactivate an Active ORDEREDITING- discount during an order edit. Removing it while Shopify is recalculating can prevent Order Editing from preserving the original saving.

Status or situation

Recommended action

Active and recently created

Leave it unchanged. It may support a current edit or recalculation.

Expired

No action is required. It can no longer apply.

Active after the source discount ended

Contact Order Editing Support before changing it.

Active for more than 30 days

Contact Support. Generated mirrors should not outlive this limit.

Unexpected customer usage

Do not share the code. Contact Support so the source order and discount can be reviewed.

Missing the Order Editing title, prefix, or creator

Do not assume Order Editing created it. Check Created by and contact the listed app owner.

Why more than one code can appear

Each original redeem code can require its own mirror. Source codes may share a promotion title but have different usage histories, values, or product scopes, so Order Editing keeps their mirrors separate.

When the same source code needs another recalculation while its mirror is valid, Order Editing reuses the existing mirror instead of intentionally creating another one.

What to send Support

If a generated discount looks incorrect, contact Order Editing Support with:

  • your store domain;
  • the affected order number;
  • the full discount title and ORDEREDITING- code;
  • its status, creation time, and end time;
  • its usage count;
  • a screenshot of the discount details; and
  • whether anyone manually changed, deactivated, or deleted it.

This information helps Support compare the generated mirror with the original promotion and the edit that required it.
