Post-Purchase Discounts

Post-Purchase Discounts let you incentivize customers to add products to their order during the editing window. Set a global discount percentage that applies to all post-purchase upsells, or configure product-level discounts to offer different rates on specific items.

You'll find this at Settings > Post-Purchase Discounts.

💡 Tip: Even a small discount (5-10%) can significantly increase your post-purchase conversion rate. Test different percentages to find the sweet spot between conversion lift and margin impact.

Global Post-Purchase Discount

The global discount is a single percentage that applies to all products during post-purchase upsells. Use the Global discount percentage slider to set a value between 0% and 100%.

When set to 0%, no discount is applied and customers pay full price for any products they add. When set to a value like 10%, every product shown during the post-purchase editing experience is offered at 10% off.

Example: You set the global discount to 15%. A customer finishes checkout and decides to add a $40 accessory during the editing window. They pay $34 instead of $40, a $6 saving that incentivizes the add-on purchase while still generating incremental revenue for your store.

Product-Level Discounts

Product-level discounts let you set individual discount percentages for specific products. This is useful when you want to offer deeper discounts on high-margin items, or only discount certain products without setting a global rate.

To configure product-level discounts:

  1. Click Configure discounts in the Product-Level Discounts section.
  2. Use the filters to find specific products, then set an individual discount percentage for each one.
  3. Click Save.

ℹ️ Note: You can use product-level discounts independently or alongside the global discount. If both are set, the product-level rate takes priority for that product. They don't stack.

Product Discount Filters

The product discount configuration modal includes filters to help you find and manage discounts across your catalog.

Filter

What It Does

Select specific products

Choose individual products to include in the discount list.

Show Products with Names

Filter by product name or title. Type a keyword and press Enter to filter.

Show Products with Tags

Filter products by their Shopify product tags. Select from a dropdown of existing tags.

Show Products of Types

Filter products by their Shopify product type category. Select from a dropdown of existing types.

The product list shows each product with its image, name, price (in the customer's localized currency), and a Post-Purchase Discount field where you enter the override percentage. Products with a currency selector let you view prices in different markets.

Best Practices

Start with a modest global discount. A 5-10% global discount is a safe starting point. You can always increase it later based on conversion data.

Use product-level discounts for high-margin accessories. If you have accessories or add-ons with healthy margins, offer a deeper discount on those to drive add-on purchases without cutting into your core product margins.

Set 0% on products you don't want discounted. If certain products should never be discounted during post-purchase (like limited editions or already-discounted items), set their product-level discount to 0% to override the global rate.

Align with your upsell strategy. Match your discount levels to the products you're actively promoting through your upsell placements. Higher discounts on promoted products create a stronger conversion funnel.

FAQ

Do post-purchase discounts stack with Shopify discount codes?

No, post-purchase discounts are applied independently by Order Editing. They don't interact with or stack on top of Shopify discount codes the customer used at checkout.

Can I target different customers with different discounts?

Yes. While this settings page applies discounts globally, you can use Order Editing's upsell strategies to target different customer segments with different discount offers. Upsell strategies let you create tailored post-purchase experiences based on conditions like customer tags, order value, or product type.

Does the discount show to the customer before they add the product?

Yes, customers see the discounted price when browsing products during the post-purchase editing experience. The original price and the discount are both visible, making the offer transparent.

What happens if I change the global discount while orders are in the editing window?

Changes take effect immediately for all new product views. Customers currently in the editing window will see the updated discount the next time they browse products.
