Integrating with Athos Commerce

How to connect Order Editing with Athos Commerce (formerly SearchSpring) for personalised product recommendations.

9 min read

Overview

Athos Commerce (formerly Searchspring) is a search, merchandising, and personalisation platform for ecommerce. This integration lets you show Athos-powered product recommendations in your Order Editing upsells, so customers see relevant products during and after checkout.

Key benefits

  • Show Athos Commerce recommendations inside Order Editing upsell strategies
  • Use recommendation profile tags you've already configured in Athos Commerce
  • Use trending products when you don't want to choose a profile tag
  • Preview and verify profile tags before customers see them
  • Keep recommendation logic in Athos Commerce while Order Editing handles the upsell experience

How it works

You connect Athos Commerce using your Site ID, add one or more profile tags, then create an upsell strategy that uses the AthosCommerce (Searchspring) module. When a customer sees that strategy, Order Editing requests products from Athos Commerce and shows the returned products in the upsell.

For recommendation profiles, Order Editing sends the profile tag you selected and uses the products returned by Athos Commerce. For trending products, Order Editing reads your current trending searches, finds products for those searches, removes duplicates, and shows the final product list.

Note: Athos Commerce still controls your catalogue, recommendation logic, and profile tags. Order Editing reads those recommendations and displays them inside your upsell strategy.

Setup steps

Step 1: Get your Athos Commerce Site ID

In the Athos Commerce management console, find your Site ID. In the Order Editing app, the console link opens Open Searchspring Console.

Before connecting, make sure your Athos Commerce product feed is imported. If you want to use recommendation profiles, also make sure you know the profile tags you want to use, for example also-bought, best-selling, or a custom tag from your Athos Commerce account.

Step 2: Connect Athos in Order Editing

1. In Order Editing, go to Integrations and open AthosCommerce (Searchspring).

2. In Connection, paste your Site ID into AthosCommerce (Searchspring) Site ID.

3. Click Check status. A healthy connection confirms the Site ID is valid and shows how many products are indexed.

4. In Profile tags, add each profile tag you want Order Editing to use.

5. Review Profile tag verification. Tags with products show as ready. Tags with no products must be removed before you save.

6. Click Save AthosCommerce (Searchspring) settings.

Note: If you see "no products are indexed yet", import your product feed in the Athos Commerce console first, then run Check status again.

Step 3: Add Athos Commerce to an upsell strategy

1. In Upsell Strategies, create or edit a strategy.

2. Add the Searchspring Recommendations module. The setup modal is titled AthosCommerce (Searchspring).

3. Under Data source, choose one of these options:

  • Recommendation profiles: Pulls products from one of the profile tags you saved in the integration settings.
  • Trending products: Uses Athos Commerce trending searches to find popular products. This does not need a profile tag.

4. If you choose recommendation profiles, select a Recommendation Profile. Order Editing verifies the tag and shows a small preview when products are available.

5. Optional: open Advanced settings and set Maximum Products. This can be 1 to 20 and defaults to 10.

6. Add the offer text customers should see, then save the strategy.

Understanding profile tags

Profile tags are the names Athos Commerce uses for saved recommendation profiles. Each tag tells Athos Commerce which recommendation set to return, such as best sellers, also-bought products, or a custom group you've configured for a campaign.

Order Editing doesn't create profile tags for you. Add the tags from your Athos Commerce account, then Order Editing checks whether each tag returns products.

Common profile tag examples

  • also-bought: products commonly bought with the customer's existing products
  • best-selling or best-sellers: products that sell well across your store
  • most-popular: products Athos Commerce considers broadly popular
  • trending: products or searches currently gaining traction
  • Custom profile tags: any tag your team has configured in Athos Commerce

Tip: Use the exact tag from Athos Commerce. Profile tags are usually lowercase and may use hyphens, for example hp-best-sellers.

What the tag status means

Status

What it means

What to do

Ready

The tag returns enough products to use in a strategy.

You can use this tag in the module.

Low product count

The tag returns products, but fewer than the recommended amount.

Use a broader tag, or add more products to the profile in Athos Commerce.

No products

The tag doesn't return products.

Remove the tag before saving, then check the profile in Athos Commerce.

Choosing what to show

Use recommendation profiles for controlled recommendations

Choose Recommendation profiles when you already have Athos Commerce profiles for a specific purpose, such as best sellers, also-bought products, or a custom campaign. This gives you the most control because the module follows the profile tag you choose.

Choose Trending products when you want Athos Commerce to pick from popular searches instead of a saved profile tag. This is useful when you want a broader recommendation set or don't have profile tags ready yet.

Set a sensible product count

The module can return 1 to 20 products. The default is 10. Start with enough products to give customers choice, then reduce the count if the placement feels crowded.

Write offer text that matches the profile

Your offer text should match the profile you choose. For an also-bought profile, use wording like "Customers also bought". For best sellers, use wording like "Popular picks from our store". Clear offer text helps customers understand why the products are being shown.

Avoid recommending products already in the order

Order Editing tells Athos Commerce which products are already in the customer's order, so those products are blocked from the returned recommendations where Athos Commerce supports it. If you still see duplicate products, check the product IDs and profile setup in Athos Commerce.

What this integration doesn't change

The Athos Commerce integration only controls which products are recommended by the module. It doesn't change your editing window, order hold rules, payment capture settings, fulfilment workflow, or Athos Commerce catalogue setup.

If your goal is to control when orders are released to fulfilment, configure that separately in Order Editing settings or your fulfilment integration.

Before you go live

Before turning the strategy on for customers, check these items:

  • The AthosCommerce (Searchspring) connection is healthy
  • Your product feed has indexed products
  • Any profile tags used by the module show as ready
  • The upsell strategy is active
  • The offer text is clear and matches the products customers will see
  • The strategy's page and placement are installed where you expect customers to see it

Tip: If you're not sure which profile tag to use, start with a broad profile such as best-selling or most-popular, then refine it once you've reviewed performance.

Test the customer experience

Place a test order that matches the upsell strategy. Open the page where the strategy should appear, then check that the recommendation block loads, the offer text is clear, and the products make sense for the order.

Review performance after launch

After the strategy has been live for a few days, review your upsell performance. If customers aren't adding products, try a broader profile tag, clearer offer text, or a smaller product count.

Troubleshooting

"Invalid site ID"

Double-check the Site ID matches the one in your Athos Commerce console exactly, with no extra spaces.

"No products are indexed yet"

Your product feed hasn't been imported into Athos yet. Import it in the Athos Commerce console, then run Check status again.

"Unauthorized access"

Confirm your Athos Commerce account has integration access enabled for the Site ID you're using.

"No products found for this profile"

The selected profile tag didn't return any products. Choose a different tag, or update the profile in Athos Commerce so it returns products.

A profile shows "Low product count"

The tag returns products, but not enough to be a strong recommendation profile. Order Editing treats 11 or more products as healthy. Add more products to the profile, or choose a broader profile tag.

Recommendations aren't showing

Check that AthosCommerce (Searchspring) is connected, the profile tag has products, and the strategy using Searchspring Recommendations is active. Also confirm the page and placement for the strategy are installed.

Category Trending and Brand Trending profiles aren't currently supported in Order Editing. They need category or brand context that the module doesn't receive. Use a non-category profile such as also-bought, best-selling, most-popular, trending, or a custom profile instead.

The products don't feel relevant

Start by checking the profile tag in Athos Commerce. If the tag is too broad, create or choose a more specific profile. If the tag is too narrow, use a broader profile or try Trending products.

The module used to work, then stopped

Run Check status again and review the profile tag. This can happen if the Athos Commerce product feed changes, a profile is renamed, or a tag stops returning products.

Common questions

Is Athos Commerce the same as Searchspring?

Yes. Athos Commerce is the new name for Searchspring. The Order Editing app still shows some labels as AthosCommerce (Searchspring) or Searchspring.

Do I need a separate key or token?

No. Athos connects with your Site ID only, so there's no separate key or token to manage.

Where do customers see Athos Commerce recommendations?

Customers see them inside active Order Editing upsell strategies that use the Searchspring Recommendations module.

Yes. Choose Trending products as the data source when you add AthosCommerce (Searchspring) to an upsell strategy. Profile tags are only required for the recommendation profiles data source.

Is there an extra Order Editing cost?

No. You need an active Athos Commerce account, but the Order Editing integration is included with your Order Editing subscription.

Does Order Editing edit my Athos Commerce catalogue?

No. Athos Commerce remains the source of truth for your catalogue and recommendation profiles. Order Editing reads from Athos Commerce and shows the returned products.

What happens if Athos Commerce returns no products?

If the selected profile returns no products, the module doesn't have products to show. Choose a profile tag that returns products, or switch the module to Trending products.

Do I need to re-save strategies after changing my Site ID?

Yes. If you change the AthosCommerce (Searchspring) Site ID, re-save any strategies that use the module so they use the latest connection details.
