The Fallback Strategy

What the Fallback Strategy is, how it works with strategy matching, and how to set one up.

2 min read

Overview

The Fallback Strategy is the default upsell shown when no other strategy matches a customer's order. It helps you avoid empty placements and gives every eligible customer a useful recommendation.

ℹ️ Note: You have one Fallback Strategy per store. It has its own setup page and does not use customer targeting filters.

How it works

When a customer views an upsell placement, Order Editing checks your Active strategies first. If no targeted strategy matches, the Fallback Strategy can show instead.

Your targeted strategies always take priority. The Fallback Strategy only handles customers who do not match a more specific offer.

💡 Tip: Treat the Fallback Strategy as your "everyone else" offer. Use broad products like bestsellers, new arrivals, accessories, or gift cards.

Set up the Fallback Strategy

  1. In the Order Editing app, go to Upsell Strategies.
  2. Open the Settings menu.
  3. Select Fallback strategy.
  4. Give the strategy a clear internal name.
  5. Add the product modules you want to show.
  6. Click Save.

Because the Fallback Strategy has no filters, choose products that make sense for most customers.

What products to include

Product type

Why it works

Bestsellers

They already convert well across many customer segments.

New arrivals

They help customers discover fresh products after purchase.

Complementary products

They keep the offer relevant to the customer's cart.

Low-risk add-ons

Accessories, consumables, and gift cards are easy extra purchases.

ℹ️ Note: The Subscription Upsell module is not available on the Fallback Strategy. Use it in a targeted strategy instead.
