The Complementary Products module shows products that go with items in the customer's cart or order. It uses Shopify Search & Discovery complementary product data.
When to use it
Use Complementary Products when the best offer is an add-on, accessory, or matching item.
- Batteries for electronics.
- Socks or care products for shoes.
- Brushes, cases, refills, or replacement parts.
- Products frequently bought together.
Before you begin
Complementary Products depends on Shopify Search & Discovery. If complementary products are not configured in Shopify, the module may return no products.
Note: Order Editing warns you if it can't verify complementary product setup. The module can still be added, but it may not show products until Shopify has data to use.
Setup steps
- Open the upsell strategy you want to edit.
- In the Product modules section, click Add Module.
- Select Complementary Products.
- Confirm the module is enabled.
- Set the Recommended Quantity.
- Write Offer Text, such as "Complete your order with
$productName". - Optional: add product filters to narrow which complementary products can appear.
- Click Save.
Configuration options
Option | What it controls | Recommended approach |
Enabled | Whether complementary products can appear. | Keep it enabled after Shopify complementary products are configured. |
Product filters | Narrows which complementary products can show. | Use filters to avoid expensive add-ons on small orders. |
Recommended Quantity | The suggested add-on quantity. | Use the quantity the customer realistically needs. |
Offer Text | The message that explains the product relationship. | Use "pairs well with" or "complete your order" copy. |
Recommendations
Complementary Products works best when the customer can immediately understand why the product is useful. Keep offer text practical and specific.
Goal | Recommendation |
Increase attachment rate | Use "complete your order" or "pairs well with this" copy. |
Avoid empty results | Add a fallback module after Complementary Products. |
Protect margins | Use product filters to prevent expensive add-ons from appearing on small carts. |
What makes a good complementary offer
A good complementary offer solves an obvious next need. The product should feel like it completes, protects, refills, or improves the purchased item.
Avoid using this module for broad discovery. If the product is simply similar, use Related Products instead.
Recommended fallback
Add a Collection or Group of Products module after Complementary Products. This protects the strategy when Shopify doesn't return complementary products.
Troubleshooting
No products appear
Check that complementary products are set up in Shopify Search & Discovery for the purchased products.
The recommendations are too broad
Review your Shopify recommendation data, then add product filters in Order Editing if you need extra control.
