The Smart Recommendation module is built for Free Shipping Upsell strategies. It automatically recommends products that help the customer reach your free-shipping threshold.
When to use it
Use Smart Recommendation as the default product source for Free Shipping Upsell strategies.
- You want products selected around the customer's free-shipping gap.
- You want recommendations to adapt as store sales data changes.
- You don't want to manually maintain products for every threshold.
- You want products sorted from closest to the gap to larger options.
How it works
Order Editing checks the customer's cart subtotal and the matching free-shipping threshold. It then looks for eligible products that can help the customer reach free shipping.
Products are sorted from closest to the remaining gap to larger products. If a product has several variants, Order Editing highlights a variant that can get the customer over the threshold when possible.
Setup steps
- Create or open a strategy for the Free Shipping Upsell.
- In the Product modules section, click Add Module.
- Select Smart Recommendation.
- Write Offer Text.
- Optional: open Product scope and add a Shopify search query to narrow the product pool.
- Optional: add additional rules, such as maximum percentage of cart subtotal or title filters.
- Click Save.
Configuration options
Option | What it controls | Recommended approach |
Product scope | The product pool Smart Recommendation can use. | Leave it blank first, then narrow only if needed. |
Maximum cart percentage | Prevents products above a cart-value limit from showing. | Use it to avoid offers that feel too expensive. |
Title filters | Includes or excludes products by title text. | Use this for simple guardrails, not complex merchandising. |
Offer Text | The message shown with recommended products. | Connect the offer to reaching free shipping. |
Recommendations
Leave product scope blank at first. This gives Order Editing the largest product pool to choose from.
Add scope only when you have a clear reason, such as excluding bulky items, focusing on accessories, or limiting recommendations to a campaign category.
Goal | Recommendation |
Best coverage | Leave product scope blank and rely on eligibility filters. |
Accessory-only recommendations | Use product scope to include accessory tags or product types. |
Avoid bulky products | Exclude products globally with Hidden Products, or narrow scope by query. |
What makes this different from Collection
Collection shows products from a fixed product pool. Smart Recommendation adjusts around the customer's remaining free-shipping gap.
This makes Smart Recommendation better for Free Shipping Upsell strategies where the right product depends on the cart subtotal.
How to use Product scope
Start without scope. Add scope only after you see products that don't match your merchandising goals.
Good scope examples include accessory tags, lightweight product types, campaign products, or items with reliable margins.
Troubleshooting
The module doesn't appear in the picker
Smart Recommendation only appears for Free Shipping Upsell strategies.
No products appear
Check that the customer is below the free-shipping threshold, the strategy has a matching threshold, and eligible products exist in the store.
The recommendations are too broad
Open Product scope and add a query to limit products by tag, vendor, product type, or keyword.
