Overview
This guide shows you how to send Order Status Page upsell offers through Klaviyo. Use it when you want Order Editing to detect an eligible upsell strategy, send the Upsell Offers Available event to Klaviyo, and let Klaviyo send the follow-up email or SMS.
The customer still accepts the offer on the Shopify Order Status Page. Klaviyo is used to bring the customer back to that offer with the right message.
Important: This setup uses Order Status Page upsell strategies and the Events section inside the strategy. Do not choose any hidden or legacy email-only upsell surface.
When to use this setup
Use this setup when you want a customer to receive a timely Klaviyo message after their order qualifies for an Order Status Page offer.
It works well for:
- Warranty or protection offers after a high-value order.
- Accessory offers based on products the customer bought.
- Replenishment offers for products customers may need again soon.
- VIP offers for high-value customers or audiences you target with Shopify Segments.
- Win-back or retention offers for customers matched by your Order Editing strategy targeting.
If the customer only needs to see an offer when they naturally return to the Order Status Page, you can use the normal Order Status Page upsell setup without a Klaviyo flow.
Requirements
- Klaviyo connected in Integrations > Klaviyo.
- An Order Status Page upsell placement installed in Shopify.
- Permission to create or edit upsell strategies in Order Editing.
- Permission to create Klaviyo flows.
- A safe test order you can use to generate a real Upsell Offers Available event.
Before you build the flow: Create or choose the Order Editing strategy first. The strategy name, strategy ID, offer text, and order status URL are the data Klaviyo will use.
Create the order-status upsell strategy
- In Order Editing, go to Upsell Strategies.
- Click Create Strategy.
- Choose an Order Status Page placement.
- Add a clear strategy name, such as Warranty offer, Accessory offer, or VIP replenishment offer.
- Choose the markets and strategy targeting rules that should qualify for this offer.
- Use Shopify Segments for audience targeting, and order or product rules such as products purchased, collections, product type, product tags, SKU or title text, order value, discount code, or line item count to narrow the offer.
- Add the product module you want the customer to see.
- Set the offer text and offer description so they match the message you plan to send in Klaviyo.
- Keep the strategy in Draft until the placement and Klaviyo flow are ready.
Order Editing sends the Klaviyo event when a new order matches this active strategy. The customer does not need to open the Order Status Page before the event can be sent.
Audience idea: Use Shopify Segments when the strategy itself should only match a defined audience. In Klaviyo, avoid re-segmenting the same audience unless you have a specific suppression rule. Split the flow by StrategyName when one flow handles multiple offer strategies.
Audience targeting ideas
The best Klaviyo upsell flows start with a clear audience, but that audience should usually be decided by the Order Editing strategy. Use Shopify Segments in Order Editing when the strategy should only qualify a defined audience. In Klaviyo, use the event trigger and strategy splits to send the right message.
Audience | Targeting idea | Offer example |
VIP customers | Use a Shopify Segment in the Order Editing strategy. | Early access, premium accessory, limited product, or exclusive bundle. |
Product owners | Target customers whose order contains a specific product, SKU, product type, tag, or collection. | Warranty, refill, case, accessory, or care kit. |
High-value orders | Use order total, line item count, market, product rules, or discount code rules. | Protection plan, gift wrapping, expedited add-on, or premium upgrade. |
Regional campaigns | Use market targeting when offers differ by country, currency, product availability, or pricing. | Region-specific replenishment, seasonal item, or local bestseller. |
Best practice: Use Shopify Segments for audience rules in the Order Editing strategy. Customer tags are not available as an Order Editing upsell targeting option here. In Klaviyo, avoid adding the same audience segment again unless you need a specific suppression rule.
Before launch: Test the exact strategy with a real order before relying on any audience rule to control Klaviyo sending. Klaviyo can only trigger flows from events Order Editing actually sends.
Choose the right placement
Placement | Use it when | Best Klaviyo follow-up |
Featured Product Upsell | You want one focused offer shown as its own app block on the Order Status Page. | A specific message for one product or campaign, such as warranty, accessory, or VIP offer. |
You want a broader set of recommendations inside the main Order Editing block. | A general message that brings the customer back to browse available add-ons. |
Recommended: Start with Featured Product Upsell when Klaviyo will send the follow-up. A single focused offer is easier to explain in one email or SMS.
For the full placement setup, see Setting Up Order Status Page Upsells.
Enable Klaviyo events on the strategy
- Open the upsell strategy in Order Editing.
- Scroll to the Events section.
- Select Klaviyo.
- If Klaviyo shows as not connected, use the connect button or go to Integrations > Klaviyo and reconnect it.
- Save the strategy.
When this strategy is active and a new order matches it, Order Editing sends the Upsell Offers Available metric to Klaviyo.
Important: Selecting Klaviyo in the strategy Events section is required. Connecting Klaviyo alone does not make every upsell strategy send offer events.
Create the Klaviyo flow
- In Klaviyo, go to Flows.
- Create a new flow.
- Choose Metric as the trigger type.
- Select OrderEditing | CX Automations.
- Choose Upsell Offers Available.
- Add trigger filters if only some strategy events should enter this flow.
- Add an email or SMS step.
- Use
{{ event.OrderStatusUrl }}as the main button URL. - Preview the message with a real event from a safe test order.
- Set the flow live after the strategy, placement, split rules, and message are confirmed.
Smart Sending: Leave Skip recently emailed profiles unticked for this message. If it is ticked, Klaviyo can skip customers who should receive the offer follow-up.
Split by strategy name or strategy ID
If one Klaviyo flow handles several upsell strategies, add a trigger split or conditional split after the flow trigger.
Use StrategyName when your team wants readable split rules in Klaviyo. Use StrategyId when you want the split to keep working even if someone renames the strategy later.
- Use Upsell Offers Available as the flow trigger.
- Add a split where
StrategyNameequals the strategy name, or whereStrategyIdequals the strategy ID. - Add one branch for each major strategy, such as warranty offer, accessory offer, replenishment offer, VIP offer, or regional campaign.
- Write each branch so the message matches that strategy's offer.
- Add a fallback path for any strategy name or ID that does not match a dedicated branch.
Best practice: Use one flow with splits when the timing and goal are the same. Use separate flows when timing, channel, audience rules, or reporting need to be managed separately.
For example, one flow can branch from Upsell Offers Available into a warranty email, an accessory email, and a VIP email based on the matching strategy. If the VIP strategy needs a different send delay, channel mix, or reporting owner, create a separate flow for that strategy instead.
Use offer data in your message
The Upsell Offers Available event includes offer and strategy data you can reference in Klaviyo content. Confirm the exact values from a real Klaviyo preview event before setting the flow live.
Event variable | Use it for |
| Showing or checking the merchant-friendly strategy name. |
| Stable trigger splits and reporting. |
| The offer headline or main offer copy. |
| Supporting offer copy. |
| The button URL that brings the customer back to the Order Status Page. |
| Deadline copy, if the value appears in your test event. |
Tip: Keep the call to action pointed at {{ event.OrderStatusUrl }}. The offer is accepted on the Order Status Page, not inside Klaviyo.
Test the full journey
- Confirm Klaviyo is connected in Order Editing.
- Confirm the Order Status Page placement is installed in Shopify.
- Activate the upsell strategy or use a safe test version of the strategy.
- Place a test order that matches the strategy rules.
- In Klaviyo, open the test customer profile and confirm Upsell Offers Available appears.
- Open the event details and confirm
StrategyName,StrategyId,OfferText, andOrderStatusUrlare present. - Use that event to preview the Klaviyo message.
- Send yourself a test message.
- Click the button and confirm it opens the Order Status Page with the expected upsell.
Do this before launch: Test both a matching order and a non-matching order. The matching order should receive the event; the non-matching order should not.
Troubleshooting
The event is not showing in Klaviyo
Confirm Klaviyo is connected, the strategy is active, Klaviyo is selected in the strategy Events section, the order matches the strategy rules, and the order has an Order Status Page URL.
The flow is not sending
Check that the flow is live, the trigger is Upsell Offers Available, Smart Sending is not blocking the message, and any trigger filters or splits match the test event.
The wrong branch is used
Open the event details in Klaviyo and compare the actual StrategyName or StrategyId value with the split rule. If strategy names change often, use StrategyId.
The button does not open the offer
Confirm the button URL uses {{ event.OrderStatusUrl }}. Also confirm the strategy is still active and the Order Status Page placement is installed.
